My son was labeled half way through his junior year and things have gone down hill ever since. He is almost finished his senior year ,but continues to do poorly mostly due to his lack of effort, saying he is stupid. I feel he has given up. He has been admitted to Johnson&Wales Univ.,but I am not sure if he will survive there even with the LD program they have there. Someone told me of a school in FLA. that is called CLE college learning ? I need help.

Your story is a sad one but all too familiar for many kids. Fortunately there are many post secondary placements where your son can be successful. CLE or College Living Experience is a program in Florida where kids can go to college part time but learn independent living skills. Can you son manage money on his own? Take care of his personal needs? He may not need such an intensive program. There are many schools such a Curry College outside of Boston, Lynn University in Florida that have wonderful programs for kids with learning disabilities that will take into account his late diagnosis. Another good one is University of the Ozarks in Arkansas. There are many. Good luck to you and please e-mail me if I can be of more help.

I always suggest the K&W Guide to Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities. You could also check out Peterson’s Guide To the Independent Schools and consider a “13th”year at a boarding high school that specializes in students with learning differences.

Try Mitchell College, New London, CT. It has a very extensive learning support department.

My daughter was ready to go to Lynn University but decided at the last minute that she wanted to stay closer to home. I was very impressed with everyone there. The cost was a major issue but we would have done it if necessary. They have an entirely professional staff and courses especially directed to LD students that are multisensory. If she doesn’t like where she is going it will be our next choice. Check it out.
I’m not familiar with that one, but there is Beacon COllege which is entirely for LD students (in Florida). The International Dyslexia association’s bulletin generally has several advertisements for postsecondary options for students with LDs. You can drop in to the closest university library and wave ‘em over the copy machine.
