precollege program at Curry College?

Is anyone familiar with the one week precollege program offered at Curry College? I was interested in feedback regarding both the program itself and long term success . It is for LD/ADD jrs and srs in high school with above average intelligence. It is to help with time mgmt, organization, study skills etc to help ease them into college. Thanks.

… here at our community college there’s a one- or two- week “Bridge” program that’s really valuable just for introducing students to the facilities and what’s available and how to find help. (Students also get a $200 voucher towards their books, & it’s free…)

Marlene,

I am a educational consultant who specializes in placements for students with learning disabilities. I have not had any personal experience with this summer program but have only the highest regard for the work they do with the college kinds. Hope this isn’t too late!

Dear Marlene,

I have only heard about Curry’s summer program. However, my daughter just finished a three-week residential program at Landmark College in Vermont.
She will be a highschool senior starting tomorrow. It was only for kids going into their senior year. There were 25 boys and 9 girls. This was the first year of the program. My daughter had a life transforming experience there.

Initially, she did not want to go; in fact, we had to bribe her. They worked on study and note taking skills, communication, social, and self-advocacy skills, organization and time management, and reading and writing skills. It was intense— classes from 9 to 3 with a lunch break, a seminar before dinner, and 2 hours of study time.

She loved it. It was liberating for her to be with kids like herself. She realized how smart everybody was, even though it doesn’t show in her grades. Even with all of the work, she had a ball! She wants to go back for a year or two to really sharpen her skills (she has ADD and non-verbal learning disability). It cost $3500. There is definitely a difference in her. I hope it lasts through her senior year. All of the parents were thrilled with their children’s experience there.
