off to college and a ld

Well, I do some of the support at one :) It’s a community college and we have an LD services center; if you’re in a developmental class then you get my tutoring services, counseling services (including help with outside-of-school issues) and access to a computer lab with assistive & instructional software. The goal is, exactly, to figure out what high-risk students need in order for htem to stick around & graduate.

Most students have to take a placement test in math & english - if you don’t do well enough on it, you don’t go right into the 101 or 104 or whatever courses. You take “Math 094” or 098, or Critical Reading Skills or College Study Strategies. No surprise that lots of folks with LDs end up taking these courses.
Now, there’s no reason I can see why these courses aren’t taught in high school to save everybody time & money (and there are some high schoolers who come over & take the courses for high school credit).

If you want you can email me and I can get my daughter to answer any answers that I don’t know. At kirkwood community college, she has a support team that helps with her academic homework. Kyla has a learning disability in writing and also adhd. She has tutors and she been getting help by vocational rehab for computer services

My son will be starting Muskingum college,in New Concord, Ohio, this fall. The college has an excellent support program call Plus Program. My son has adhd and is very disorganized. He will receive support by taking a smaller course load, have daily tutoring, have extended time for tests taken by computer in a privatge room. The school also provides mentors for ld students. The school will accommodate specific disability as long as it is documented. The school also has a two week orientation summer program for students in the plous program. The Plus program appears to be very supportive. There is an extra yearly cost for this program. The school seems to be very committed to doing everything it can, to help the ld student succeed. My husband and I feel very optimistic and hopeful about this program.

This is one program that was posted about on this board a few years ago. There apparently was a parent who had a son in this program, and he supposedly graduated!!! I have kept this school in the back of my mind. The parents were extremely pleased with this college and the program. I am keeping it in mind. I wish both parents and directors of ld programs would post here so that parents could get a sense of the individual universities/colleges and what they can offer to a learning disabled person.
