Schools in NY/Pa./NJ/Conn

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Have a son in HS. Grades B-B+ with occasional C and A.
Doesn’t know what he wants to do yet, but leaning towards business major, but really unsure. His main difficulty is organizing materials without losing them, budgeting his time, and neatness. He could easily be distracted by fun things to do at school without somebody telling him it is time to stop playing and get to work. I see him as a kid who could easily get Cs Ds and an F or 2 if I do not find the right college for him. He does not require any remedial work. He needs somebody to call him in the minute he starts to slide. Any suggestions on colleges? I would send him to other states than listed above if his needs were being met better at that institution. He does not want to live at home and begin at a community school (most everyone goes away in his HS).

Hmmm…. I don’t know details on schools there but I do know some schools here have “learning communities” that you sign up for and you’re in classes with the same people and there are basically people who will notice if you disappear.
How does *he* feel about this? Is he aware of this need, kinda sorta, or thinks he would do just fine if people would stop bugging him?

Brenda,
Great question. He does recognize the need, but there have been a few teachers who meant well, but he felt he was being picked on, and bugged, getting unfair special and unnecessary treatment that other reg. ed students did not get. So both issues are the case. He does recognize his disorganization and need for structure, and at times deeply resents at, yet knows he needs it. I have read about such learning communities without it being labeled as such. Any further info would be appreciated.
