I understand that after September 2003 there will no longer be a flag on a students SAT results that say “taken with modifications” for those students who receive extended time, larger print, or oral adminstration.
My son has tested into the Duke University TIP (talented) program that has 7th graders take the SAT and then they take the PSAT in 8th grade. A lot of the students he is friends with also tested into this program.
My son is extremely dyslexic/dysgraphic and would certainly need accommidations to take the test. He received oral testing in math on the state test and scored “advanced” and that’s how he was tapped for Duke TIP.
Should we take the SAT in January and get accommodations and have his test flagged or wait and not take it until after September when the rules change. My concern is that if he takes one SAT with help and they have a record of the accomodation then even when he takes it again without the flag the colleges might have a record of this test and extra help.
What would you do if this was your son? He wants to take the SAT since his friends are, plus he “earned” a chance to take it. But will this come back to haunt us when he’s in hight school trying to get into college?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
Re: SAT flags?
The rule has changed in the SAT. For High School students beginning this fall all SAT scores are reported to colleges. I think that pre- High School scores are not reported to colleges.
To get accommodations a form must be filled out by the parent and the school about six weeks in advance of the test date.

Re: Oops
I think this would vary from college to college.
The latest I’ve read is that studies show that accommodations only raise a students score by about 40 points.

Pre-High School SAT's
Both my children took SAT’s in 7th and 8th grades as part of the Johns Hopkins Talented Youth program. None of those SAT’s are included in any info to colleges unless the student sends it in on their own (but I’ve never known any who do).
Re: Pre-High School SAT's
What about in H/S? If the colleges see flags do they say “uh oh” or does it still mainly depend on the scores? In other words, a high score with a flag would be better than a low score without?
Re: Pre-High School SAT's
I don’t know. I don’t think we’re going to get admissions officers to give us an honest answer. I DO know of two fellows whose SAT’s were flagged and both of them were accepted into Ivy League universities. Both are bright creative guys and that shone through their applications.
He can take the sats as many times as he wants or needed and can submit the test with the highest score. The others will be all canceled out. The school won’t know how many times he has taken it. eteal wrote:
