I am wondering what impact Dr. Levine’s approach may have for children who have a Non-Verbal Learning Disorder (NLD)? Have any of you parents with a NLDer looked into this?

Goes beyond labeling
Dr. Levine’s _Educational Care_ book describes lots of problems that would go in the NVLD camp. One of the advantages of his approach is the way he doesn’t look for a “diagnosis” as if there were four major LDs and if we could only figure out which one you had, we could give it the standard treatment and be done with it. LDs just aren’t like measles or broken legs — the brain’s too much more complicated.
I really like _Educational Care_ because I can look through it and find advice and strategies for dealing with problems — including disorganization, motor skill problems and you-name-it.
I do agree that one of the most damaging thinking patterns is that belief that somehow all this stuff works out in adulthood. Too many elementary school teachers look at a kid with a skills gap and think ‘okay, but gee, these kids have strengths, and he’ll figure out how to call upon them, after all, Einstein did!” Often there’s this “well, I just don’t understand that kid, so I’ll hope for the best.” In the meantime a kiddo is… you already know. And you know how many adults are really struggling to survive, instead of thriving. (OTOH, there are lots and lots and lots of other reasons that humans lead “lives of quiet desperation” - even and especially the ones looking most “successful.” It’s not a bad thing to be struggling.)

Does Dr. Levine test adults? I would really like to know and understand more the specifics of my LD.
Re: Goes beyond labeling
As the mother of a 7 yr. old with NLD, it goes without saying that I was “glued to the TV” when Misunderstood Minds was aired on PBS. In every child featured I saw a little bit of my own son….and saw the anguish in faces of the moms and dads who are searching for answers for their children. That is where I am at. I am looking for help for my child and no one seems to truly understand NLD. I have ordered Mel Levine’s book, One Mind at a Time and am looking forwarded to hearing what he has to say.
Re: Goes beyond labeling
I was told by the head of special education in our county that NLD was not recognized by the school system and was difficult to diagnose. It’s more productive for the child to be labeled with some other LD. We’re homeschooling now. I appreciate this website for offering information on how to learn successfully! We’re doing it.
LD services began as a service to narrow down the problem(s). I am not familiar with Dr. Levine or hie straegies. Where is his web site? Here is a little bright news: parents of LD/ADHD students are happy to here my story and my accomplishments. It gives them hope. And like I told my boss yesterday, “What do you think happens to kids like my students when they grow up? They don’t vanish off the earth… They grow into people like me. An adult with LD/ADHD. It doesn’t go away.”
