Need advice for management system

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello! I am an LD Resource teacher; this year I have taught 6-8 grade students and will be teaching these same grades next year. For the past four years I have used a “checkbook” system for classroom management (students earn points, deposit them in their checkbook, and write a check to “spend” their points at a monthly store). While the kids still seem to be motivated by this program, I am getting tired of it and would like to try something new. Does anyone know of a good classroom management system I could use? I am open to any and all suggestions : )

Thank you!

This is what I use for classroom management and it works well for me. I give each child a point sheet with 100 boxes on it that is stapled to a piece of construction paper. Ten boxes go across and ten down. The students earn points based on participation in class discussion and activities, behavior during the day or week as may be the case, practice problems, games, etc. You can set up the number of points however you want. When the students earn 50 points, they get to choose a reward from a reward menu. When the student has the sheet filled up–100 points, they choose from my prize box. We note on their sheet what they chose for reward menu and prize box so we have a record that shows what they chose. A new sheet is then stapled on top of the previous sheet and the system continues. This has been the most manageable system I have used in 13 years of teaching resource. My students love it, the sheet is portable, and doesn’t take up much space. We call our point sheet our “Initial Sheet” because we record our initials from our name in the boxes. I have thought about using a checkbook system, but with 30 students, it is very time consuming. This works for me, hope it works for you!

Hi Dee,
I am curious what grades you teach and what types of things are on your reward menu and what kinds of things are in your prize box.
Thanks for your time
Vicky
