Hi all,

I am totally confused!! My daughter is 5 she turned 5 the end of October so she is young. She is in kindergarden this year and has some dificulties in speach and expression. I had her tested through our local school district she goes to private school at the moment. The only testing they will do for a kindergardener is speech. So we did that and she has problems, so I’m going to request a Audiologist to test her?? Whatever that does…and then she is also having some more testing done before the end of the school year. I have enrolled her in public school for 1st grade so she can get the extra help she needs.

Anyone else have this speech expressive problem? and what have you done about it?

She also has terrible alligeries and hugh tonsils which I cannot get the doc to take out. I’m taking her to the doc tomorrow for new alligery medicine so well see…Anything anyone can tell me would be great!!!!!!!!

Also my neice has a Auditory processing problem and I’m wondering if this is something that runs in families?

Thanks

Momoftwo!!

Yes, auditory processing does run in families. Have an audiologist do a central auditory processing exam on your child. What you’re describing sounds like my daughter who has auditory processing problems. We had this done and we so glad we did.

Hi,
My son has various allergies, especially food allergies. A book that helped me was
“Is this your child?” By Doris Rapp. Really helped me alot. I have two children with central auditory processing. My son has had speech help as well. It really helped. His speech was very difficult for others to interpret…I was used to it. The only question I have is about the public school saying that speech is their only testing?

My son had early intervention and was tested at 4 years old by the public school. I would question their limitations on the testing.

Good luck.

Speech was the one thing they would start with and we did that. Now we are testing further though the school district. I just hope we can come up with a good plan to move her along in school!!

Thanks everyone for all your comments.

Maybe every state is different but doesn’t and evaluation have to cover all areas of suspected disability. My son is five, almost six, he was tested through the public school because he also attends private school.

He was evaluated using the Weschler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, more speech and lang test than I can name, including a SCAN for auditory processing disorders, Brigance, and a series of acheivement test.

It turns out that he does have an auditory processing disorder and the neuropsychologist I met with yesterday recommended an auditory processing screen. However, the audiologist in my area who does them does not usually do them until age 7. She did however agree to see him in September when he is 6 yrs old.

It sounds like you need a more thorough eval to rule out other issues. It also sounds like you may want to get a second opinion on your daughters allergies and tonsils. Maybe with an pediatric ear, nose, and throat doctor if you haven’t done so already. My son also has enormous tonsils but since he never has strep or any throat related issue his DR. recommended leaving them in and only removing if there was a problem, which to date there hasn’t been.

Hi Mom of Two,

Do you know what test that they have done already. This sounds alot like what we have been going through. I have twin daughters that have had speech problems so we thought. I had them tested in our school district when they were 4. I was told that they were boarder line and if they had room they would put them in. They had 10 months of ear infections when they were born before they put in tubes. At 4 they had there tonsils removed after one just about quit breathing because they were so large. We went through Kindergarten not noticing a problem . Still in speech and on IEP’s and will continue in 1st Grade. So now in first grade they split my daughters telling me that it would be better for them. So I blamed the not learning and having difficulties in school on that to begin with. By second quarter the teacher had been saying that one of the girls was crying in class anytime she was asked to sound out a word or other things. At Christmas I pushed to have them tested and put in our Title program for reading. After the testing that the school did came back boarder line. They would not do anymore testing until 2nd quarter of Second grade . need less to say we were already behind. I had their vision and hearing also tested and 3 specialist said to have it checked for Audio processing disorder. So that is were we are now . We are just getting results back for these tests and both of them have it. Now had I not keep going and finding out about this we would have probably been at least 1 1/2 to 2 year behind before they would have even found it . Hang in there. It takes a lot of fighting to get them to test for things but if you feel it is right keep going. Your her mother.
