Hosting a parent night, any suggestions?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have been recently asked to present strategies for LD parents at a local special educaiton parent night. I have done so in the past and have used this message board as my tool for developing my agenda. What is it that parents really want to know????
This is what I have so far and welcome any of you suggestions:
* LD definition
* IDEA- Inclusion (Parents Bill of Rights and IDEA 1997)
* At Home with your LD child- homework and socail skills
* Supplementary Aids- Lindamood Bell and Steck-Vaughn
DO you know of any other effective resources or authors????
(Please keep in mind I only have 30 minutes to present.)
Thanks, Mello

I would love for my school to give a presentation on what we (parents of disabled children) should or could expect from the school and what in turn they expect from us. Many misunderstandings and disagreements stem from parents being in the dark as to what the school can actually offer their children. Also for any new comers (even the veterans don’t know all of the players), a who’s who (SPED director: what he/she does), psychologist, etc. Also any help that you can offer for parents for being involved in the IEP process (the way it should actually be done) would be most appreciated I’m sure. Best of luck!
