Hi,
I have a question that stems from the PBS program “Misunderstood Minds.” I recall that this program mentioned a State (or county?) that had worked out a projected method of estimating their future prison sizes by (3rd grade?) child literacy scores.
I just cought the PBS program peripherally when it re-aired some months ago and now I find myself wanting /needing to site this statistic, state and method in the intro. of a MS thesis.
Outside of the PBS program itself/generally - Can any one lead me to the documented source of this statement, Or individual who cited it so that I may contact them?
Sincerely
Bill
Re: Saw the program - don't remember that particular detail
Bill,
I taped the program…Then I wrote it down word for word because I too needed it in a paper it goes something like this…
According to Dr. G. Reid Lyon, of the National Institute of Health:
In some states, prisons are predicted on the bases of third and fourth grade literacy rate. So, it does portend an alienation from society in a sense. And it is for these downstream consequences of loss of self-esteem, poor academic development, limited vocabulary and other cognitive developments…difficulty with social relation, difficulty getting and holding jobs and getting in trouble with the law, that we consider reading problems to not only be an educational issue, but a public health issue and a public health concern as well.
Lyon, G. Reid. ?Misunderstood Minds.? 28 March 2002.
Hope this info is not too late…
