Looking 4 Cyber Pals

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi,
I am currently teaching in a VE (Varying Exceptionalities) setting in South Florida. My class is composed of 20 (and growing) little angels from 1st grade up to 3rd. Most of my class is labeled LD with a few MH thrown in for seasoning. The class is composed mostly of males (no surprise there) and about 90 % are Hispanic. (They all speak English.) About 2/3 of the group are listed as part-timers and are with me for only part of the day.

I’m looking for a class for individual or group for cybering experiences and fun! I am betting this will increase the reading and writing skills for all concerned. Not to mention the fun they would have learning about one another. Ideally, I would like to correspond with a class that is located away from the south Florida region so the students can be exposed to a different style and way of life.

Thanks!

Daniel,

This is off your topic, but are you saying that you have 1/3 of your caseload (about 7?) with you ALL day plus you have the remainder (about 13) as resource caseload? Wow. That is really too much for one class. How many do you have in the room at any one time?

I think my son Hunter age 9 almost 10 he will be 10 on Jan. 4. would like or correspond with someone else who has LD problems, Hunter has been diagnosed with ADD since he was 5 years old he started special education last year he also see an OT once a week for visual perception and fine motor skill problems. Hunter is in the 4th grade at R. L. Young Elementary School in Talladega, Ala. Please e mail Hunter at the following e mail address: [email protected]. I feel this might help Hunter immensely because he doesn’t have many close friends. Thanks Teresa Sewell

Daniel,
Try epals.com. They have a large database of classrooms to choose from, and you can even submit your own class in hopes of someone “adopting” your class as well. I have been using this site for many years and my students have communicated with others in Australia, Russia, France, and Italy. We live in rural Georgia and any exposure to another culture is definitely a plus. Having epals is a wonderful experience for my kiddies as they are given a choice to disclose their disability or not. I leave it totally up them to make that decision. This allows them to be able to have a friend who doesn’t know that they have a disability and have a friendly relationship with someone who thinks that they are no different than anyone else. The site is very secure and you will also be able to set up an email account for each of students. The emails would go directly to you first before they are sent to the respective receipitant. Have fun with this site and good luck to you and your students!

I have all 20 for over an hour each day. It’s not too bad. I have 4 on the computers, 4 at the listening center,1 on Math Sarfari, 1 on language master and 4 at the writing center. … ever so often we all switch. Yes, it’s too many, but with the budget the way is ….. oh well.
