Capd

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello to all, just heard the term CAPD about 2 hours ago for the very first time and it sounds like what I think I knew my son had for years. We had a hearing test done today and when that came back fine his teacher talked to me about capd.I am going to get him tested and then what…what will happen next? Is this hereditary? My younger son seems to have very sensitive ears, and just does not follow direction at all.I just thought well maybe he doesn’t know what that word means yet but in hind sight I know he should know.Could both my sons have this? Does anyone else have more than one child with this? Forgive me if I am asking questions that have been answered before.I read many posts, but didn’t come across any answers. My son just turned 7.My son had speech therapy,he also had chronic ear infections then got tubes. Is there a CAPD board? Thanks for any info / replies….Melissa

Hi, Melissa,

Most of us are relieved and worried when we first start finding out more about our children’s disabilites. You are in good company here.

I don’t know of any CAPD boards but have seen the term over and over again in the “parenting a child with a LD” formum so I assume that would be a good place to post your concerns. I personally have not seen your questions posted before so I’d feel free to ask them.

This partical forum doesn’t get as much traffic and I’m afried you might not get very many responses here.

My seven yr old has CAPD too. He was diagnosed this year. We did the school eval last year and they thought he had ADD. We went to a Developmentalist who suggested a speech and hearing eval. During this testing my son was diagnosed with CAPD and it was confirmed by the developmentalist. Right now we get sppech , ot, tutoring and accomodations in class. He also has a private tutor and see a private speech pathologist. My son is still somewhat fustrated in class but the behavior has improved. He needs a lot of support to do the assignments. He is still behind his peers in expressive and receptive language. I personally find this fustrating at times. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

Hi Laura

CAPD became APD as a result of the Bruton conference 2000.
there is a link to an artilce describing why on APDUKs Interational web page, which is the same section of the APDUK web site as this link http://www.apduk.org.ukYou may also like to lookat the links on “My favorite APD links ” page which is part of my http://www.dolfrog.com web site, including a link to the CAPDlistserve and the NCAPD non profit oranisation.

and there are a couple of links pages on my http://www.ldlinks.org.uk web site as well. i am APD myself and find ther domain names for my web sites easier to remember than the actual names.

APDUK is the UK non profit organisation trying to have APD , and we reocognised officially in the UK.

hope this helps
