adult assessment of learning disability

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

DO you know of a place in NJ or NYC that does learning disability evaluations for adults? A professor reccomended i get one but i am a 23 year old college student who has made it through classes averagely, i get good grades in ones i like Fs in ones i hate and B or Cs in others.I love reading but i am a poor speller. very dependent on spellcheck, i was in the 4th grade before i could spell the word goes and that evolved into a complete power struggle.I still can not tell my left from my right , i tie my shoes and they come untied in an hour, i can not tell time to less then 5 minutes. I also have a short attention span, to really concentrate i must do at least two things at once either read a book and watch TV or play computer and watch TV but i did manage to graduate grammer school, HS and almost college. If you can help me i would like it alot.

It sounds like you may have ADD and learning disabilities in the areas of memory. Especially since you do well in things that you enjoy versus things that you don’t enjoy. Any clinical psychologist in your area should be able to help you. you may also check into the Advocacy program in your area for assistance ( http://www.protectionandadvocacy.com/ )
I was diagnosed with ADHD and also have learning disabilities…. but did graduate from college as well as graduate school.. Email me at home if you wish.

I am LD as a result of TBI. New York State VESID is supposed to help people with LD TBI ect… but generally they are abunch of screw-ups. They may be able to get you an appointment with a neuro-psychologist for a neuro-psychological evaluation but don’t hold your breath. A neuro-psychological test will probably tell you what you already know but it will make it “official”. The agencies that are supposed to help you either can’t won’t or don’t. If you deal with vesid expect to get jerked around as they stink. If you live in NJ perhaps their voc rehab is better. Chances are you are on your own if you are an adult. Just find work that is not too aggravating. Apply common sense to your problem it works better than psycho-babble. Unfortunately psychology and medicine has not kept pace with Neuro-science. Try alternative treatment. Nutrition and learn about natural remedies for the brain. Take good care of your brain and body. Eat health and exersice. Don’t worry. Be happy. Just don’t expect much help.

If you contact your local Learning Disability of America Chapter. They will send you a form to fill out to have testing done on sliding scale. They will also be able to tell you where to get testing.

I also have ADHD/LD, and Narcolepsy, an my Assoc. and going for my Bachelors. Just a piece of advice about VESID, they helped me a great deal with testing as well as helping me with funding for college. But all you need to do is what the “fellow college student” did, or you can also go see a psychiatrist or contact the CHADD Organization too. I was diagnosed from my psychiatrist. He helped me a great deal, an he’s a good friend also. We have computer experience in common, an so I can pretty much talk to him about anything.
Through this site, they can help you get an evaluation, an all you have to do is ask.
There’s plenty of help available, but all we need to do is look an ask. If you need more assistance, I’d be happy to send you in the right direction if I can.
Thanks, and Good Luck to you!

I’ve been working with children with dyslexia - and recently some adults your age have been inquiring about testing as well…the most that i’ve done is to research on tests available on the net. There are tests that you can order, fill out and send back. What they’ll do is give you the results - a report of sorts. I’d hope you could find an office that does testing though. What i’ve been using for screening is the Slingerland test - (Malcomesius)… we’ve used it for some of our teachers suspected to be dyslexic. Hope this info helps.. the website for the other tests are in the office… I’ll look for it and send it when I find them.

You can go to the college handicap department on campus. You should be able to get inforamtion about taking assessment test. Your college professor can make inquiry on you behalf to get help.

I hope this help. Good luck.
