I just found out recently that I am dyslexic, and having a hard time running around in circles. I have always known I had a problem, but I figured I was just slow. But in areas where I show to have NO clue “no matter how many times someone goes over the same subject” I make up for technical areas. I have the worst time in spelling, math “forget it!” reading, I read the same sentence over and over till I can relate. I get all worked up and sometimes just say forget it. The problem is I don’t want to spend all that money going to a community collage sit in class again and pretend that I know what I am doing. I have been out of high school for almost four years, and I really want to attended, but as time goes on I feel more and more hopeless. I have to learn how to utilize my dyslexia, instead on making my life a constant struggle. Does any one have any helping idea’s, schools or program that aren’t astronomically priced. I know it must be hard to only recently find out what the problem is. I am a college senior with dyslexia and vision problem. Let me try to give you some tips:
1) Go back to college.
Try finding a program you like. Personally I tend a university of 18,000 there are 400 registered disability students about 30 with learning disabilities. Which would be considered very small number of learning disability students.
The reason I chose the University of attending is because it offers one class a month to 12 classes a year. I like that because I’m dealing with one subject matter out of time. That may work for you but it may not.
Also you may want to try online courses .At first I thought they would be more difficult but they’re turning out to be a very good choice for me. But let me restate the key for me is one class a month.
2) Recording for the Blind Dyslexia(RFBD)
Is an organization that does textbooks on tape’s. I would recommend a private membership because you could use it both textbooks and leisure reading and eventually professional reading. I can give you more information if you’re interested.
When using books on cassette follow along in the book.
3) Dictation Software
Look in dictation software the most common one is Drogon Naturally Speaking. It is the one I use Dragon Naturally Speaking 6 Preferred .Preferred has one major benefit it can read back what you wrote and it’s easier to pick up errors that way.

I understand completly what you are going through. I have dislexia also. I have been out of school for almost 6 yrs and it is very hard for me to go to college. I have all my papers stateing that I am dislexic but the colleges wont take it cus I have been out of school for so long. I have tried to take the SAT and ACT but I keep failing. I hope to someday be able to get into college.

Stephanie, sounds like more than dyslexia depending on who’s definition of dyslexia you are going by.
As far as college is concerned, try taking one college course and see how you do.
What will happen is if you try hard is you will learn how to learn with your type of disability.
Obviously you are capable of learning as you are learning new thing everyday. The only difference is with folk like you and me is it takes us longer.
Math, thats another story. Take it as many time as you need to to pass. The reason they call it math is because all the other four letter words were taken.lol

WELL I WAS HAVING TROUBLE AT WORK ALWAYS TRYING TO STAY UP WITH EVERYONE EALS IN ORDER TO KEEP MY JOB. STATEMENTS LIKE IF YOU CANT DO THE JOB YOU SHOULDNT BE WORKING THERE. I WORKED IN A PLACE FOR 14 YEARS THEN THEY LAYED ME OFF BECAUSE I MADE TO MUCH MONEY. IT TOOK THAT LONG TO MAKE $11 AN HOUR. AFTER THEY LET ME GO THEY REALIZED THEY MADE A MISTAKE. WELL THEY HIRED ME BACK. AND 1 YEAR LATER HERE I AM AGAIN .. I WENT TO REABHABILATION SERVICES THEY WILL SEND YOU TO BE TESTED. THEY WILL PAY FOR IT. AND I WILL SAY YOU ARE ADD,LEARNING DISABLE. I AM ADHD,LEARNING DISABLE MIXED TYPE, SOCIAL ANIXITY DISORDER. I WENT AND TESTED AT A COLLEGE TO SEE IF I COULD EVEN GET IN AND I MADE IT. I TAKE MED AND I WILL TELL YOU GO GET ON SOMETNING . I TAKE ADDERALL XL, 90MIG A DAY, WELLBRUTRIN STARTED AT 400MG WENT DOWN TO 150MG TWICE A DAY. I WAS PUT ON PAXEL AND BOY I COULD NOT BELEVE IT I THINK ALL THE TIME DAY AND NIGHT THIS WAS NORMAL FOR ME. WHEN I TOOK THE PAXEL IT MADE ME VERY RELAXED THE ANXITY WENT AWAY. DID YOU KNOW THEY NOW INCORAPATE DISSLEX AS ADD. BECAUSE WE HAVE TROUBLE HEARING THE SOUNDS OF THE LETTERS. ALSO THE REHAB. WILL PAY FOR YOU TO GO TO SCHOOL FOR SOME OF IT. I AM IN GRAPHIC I GO AT NIGHT 3 TIMES A WEEK. I TRYED DAYS AND COULD NOT MUSTER IT. TO FAST . SO IT WILL TAKE 2 YEARS BUT WHO CARES. THE SCHOOL KEISER IT IS PRIVER. THE REHAB WILL WANT YOU TO GO TO A COMUNITY COLLEGE. BUT LOOK FOR ONE THAT GIVES ONE CLASS FOR A MONTH OR TWO. THEN YOU GO ON TO YOUR NEXT CLASS ONE AT A TIME. AND GET ON MEDICAN YOUR FOUCS WILL BE BETTER. THE LONGER YOU TAKE IT IT WILL HELP MEMORY TO. IT IS NOT A CURE IT JUST HELPS TO SLOW YOU DOWN SO YOU CAN SEE THE FLOWERS. I SEE THINGS NOW I NEVER SAW BEFORE. GO TRY THE REHAB.
