Living with LD and making a success

Everyone has a different idea of what success is. I personally have had some successes but the impedements that LD has caused has certianly limited me greatly and made it impossible to ahcieve my potential. It has also hampered me vocationally and my vocational success consists of working crap jobs. NYS voc rehab agency in Utica is atrocious and in my case they have been a huge impedement for my and others. Any succees I have had has been inspite of them not because of them. Most of us who post here are looking for a hand up not a hand out. What we usually end up getting is a knee in the balls and a fist in the face.

I have A.D.D. and L.D. but I don’t let them stop me from doing anything! They slow me down yes, but when I want something I’ll do anything to get it. I’ve earned the rank of Eagle in the Boy Scouts of America, graduated school with a diploma in 1991, became an E.M.T. last year, and now I’m writting books for fun. If you look at some really famus people like Ozzy Ozborn, Albert Instine, Ronald Ragon, and Steven King just to name a few these are all people with a disability and most of them I’m sure you have heard of so lots of people can be acheeve their gaols. DON’T EVER QUITE!

Having LD limited me tremendously in high school. I hated being seen in the special classes I was put in. The mainstream classes that I was in I was deathly afraid of just for the fact that I may be called on to read out loud. I would sweat and get the tightest knot in my stomach anytime we would read something out loud. This fear I had was so strong I chose not to go. Instead I worked, alot 3:00 -11:00. This give me the excuse I needed for my friends and family to explain why my grades were so poor. I don’t think any of the family members know how poor my reading skills were. I my biggest fear was having them find out. I did always dream and pray someday I would complete and recieve a degree from college. More importantly I wanted to be sucessfully in business and I knew I would never get into a great company with my reading and writing skills. I knew my sucess could only come from me. I started my company at age 23. I was always looking for a opportunity when finally one come about. I am know 28 and have a sucessfully small business and just started a great family! The key to sucess with LD in my view is must work and focus on the task on hand 3 times harder then everyone else. Never give up if you get it wrong or fail find out why and redo it and learn from it only you can make yourself a success. I don’t have the skills to write a really inspiring story but I know how I felt as a teenager and would never want anyone to go through that. My advise is with you work hard and give it all you have you will suceed. Life is not easy for anyone but believe I yourself you will do it

Iam a 28yr old studeny in NYC ,I have LD an when it comes to math i suck! I would like to become a Dr of Veterinarian medicine anme failing math twice is not helping the matter,i feel frusted an defeated as well as helpless i really love animals an would like to devote my life an career to them ,but how can if math is such a big part of pre vet courses? Does anyone have any suggestions,on how to concure my math fear while dealing with LD ,an not to mention becoming a veterinarian,does anyone have any suggestions

Boy can I relate. Here are some thoughts. Try taking your Math courses in summer or a winter mini-semester and only take math then so you can devote every waking hour to it. Use the tutor service at your school. Cheat. You are probably capable of doing the math it may just take you longer. That is why you may need accomodations. Work at math a little every day on your own. Also join a study group. If it take you 3 or more trys to pass so what?

I have L.D. to but luckly for me Math is my strong point. I learned songs from a kids music book and turned the words into numbers and it helped so much. Where music makes both sides of the brain work it made it much easyier to learn them. I don’t even use a calculater in work. I have to work with milage on a van in work and drug counts every day as well as peoples ages and mix them all together and use time with them to help my patents. They joke with me when I use my fingers to count in a hospital where I work but I tail them I can use “my” fungers or theres and they usuly give me one ginger to use but it’s not the funger I need. So when you become a vet, move to N.H. so we can have a good one!

I would suggest to get a tutor at where you are going to school. Does your school have a program for students who have disabiliteis, including learnng disabilities?? check into that when you can.
