Independent Living & Employment

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am starting a new folder because I feel that these two are related. For many LD Adults if parents do not encourage and or look for the right type of help for their Ld child then when their child is in there 20’s or their 30’s then when in there 40’s that Ld Adult will be still living with a parent and be faced with finding away to live independently and not be able to do so finacaily because perhaps of working in a low incoem job. I thought that we could use this colomn to share sources in states throughout that USa that may be helpful to this population. Also many people in this situation do not have college degrees. I am looking for help for someone any where in North Carolina. If you know of vocational programs which are tied into independent living programs for people who at t age of 40 would need such a program please let me know. Although I am knowledgable this one area where resurces are not complied and or have they been developed fore LD Adults. Besides South Carolina I am also looking for resources to help someone in NYC or the surround areas. If you know of any agencies besides the headquarters for the Ld organizations in those areas which are totally useless that could lead to good solid resources or programs and or any programs then please share. If you are from any other state and are looking for resources for adutls who have missed teh boat in gettign the right tyoe of help voaccationaly and or inpendently let’s share it and see how we can help each other which will help us to help all the people that we are trying to help.

The only way I know is applying for medicaid and getting services
of case managert through agencies. i also know that YAI is giving
a 6 month workshops for those who want to be trained in independent living skill. As far as i know it is free service.

There are no resources for LD adults. When they are out of their teens they are S. O. L. This all goes back to my pet peeve VR. In NY state their VR agency sort of holds the purse strings to all the other agencies. The other agencies at least in the Mohawk valley area are staffed by a lot of bitchy cluless semi-attractive women and gay men and men in wheel chairs. At the risk of sounding like a bigot, the whole system needs a giant influx of testosterone and a huge dose of Midol.

Hi Ball,

Carol, I know this thread is getting off topic and now I am contributing to that but I wanted to respond to what Ball said about teenagers and adults with LD being so out of luck. Actually, Ball, when you think about it, in the disability world in general, kids have an easier time getting services than adults. A perfect example of this was when we did final projects in my Assistive Technology Class on various funding sources. The rules were alot less restrictive for kids than adults.

Thanks Carol for your patience and back to the question you asked initially.

I am desperately looking for as many resources regarding this subject. I am struggling with learning disabilities (ADD), depression, and anxiety too. I have gone to Vocational Rehab, but they hardly helped me at all when it came to knowing how to simply hold down a job. I live in Kansas, and it seems that there isn’t anything at all out here for people dealing with learnng disabilties. I do wish that there were some support groups around here, but none to be found. I do appreciate your message.

I could use any info that you might regarding this subject.
I have been having a very hard time just making it. My rent is going to be very late this month. It seems that no matter where I go, there’s usually a closed door. I am just plain tired of it.

I have never even heard of Independent Living programs for adults with learning disabilities. Could you tell me more about this. I can relate especially to the 1st part of your msg. My parents didn’t support and encourage me that much, cause Dad was usually in denial about this and Mom never hardly said anything. I know that they meant well, but in the long run - I feel as if I have been ripped off both vocationally and academically too. I have a hard time holding down a job because I get bored, or lately it’s because of being too tired and also I injured my left wrist at work. I never did inquire about worker’s comp either, and plus my boss never told us about it either. Anyways, This is encouraging. I am trying to get on disability, cause I can’t handle both school and work at the same time- especially when I’m trying to keep up with all the assignments. This semester, I’ve had a hard time because I’ve had withdrawals from the antidepressants I was on. I do know that getting on disability is very hard, but a friend of mine has told me about a law firm where the lawyers are willing to fill out all the paperwork for you. I also have a mild form asthma too. I have gone thru Vocational Rehab, but they help me more because there were some services that I couldn’t get because of my income and I was married at the time. Do you know of any program related to Independent Living in the state of Kansas? I am getting alimony, but only till Sept of this yr. Hope to hear from you later.

hey susan, I’m in Kansas, too! What city?!….and you’re right…I think about the only thing available to LD’ers is Voc Rehab…through SRS…and for other disabilities- depending on what they are, there’s other options. I’ve heard of a few- but don’t qualify for services….at least I don’t think I do..
