i have dyslexia and dyscalculia which would be learning disablity in reading and math. How do you deal with this new diagnosis? how do you find out info about it? how do you tell your parents about it if your a young adult?
Re: hi
Hi Dew,
When I was diagnosed with a reading disorder and Mixed receptive/expressive language disorder in 12th grade (not too long ago), I had mixed feelings about that diagnosis. In a way, I was happy that I found out what my problem was. But on the other hand, I didn’t know how to ask for the help I needed, to remediate what I have trouble in. And up to today, I still face much frustration in school.
This website, LDonline has a lot of valuable information. Schwab learning: www.schwablearning.org has a lot of info as well. You might also want to consult your school counselor, or the person who did your diagnosis. (Though those sources wasn’t helpful for me, at all!) The book, “Learning Outside the Lines”, by Jonathan Mooney and David Cole is a good book as far as study skills and such.
I never told my parents about my LD. Talking with my professors and other adults were very helpful for me.
Good luck! I’d be more than happy to talk more about my LD and how I am learning to deal with it.

hay dew,
I dont understand the shame in telling ones parents. This isent somthing that just hapen,The testing just dident cache it untell now.Your parents souldent take the news as sume big discrase, if any thing, things will make since , like trubel you may have had in school. They will propably fill gilty for not knowing and sugestting lassenas. It will help them to understand if they know more about your LD.In that you will learn more about it your self.
You may want to try contackting your local comunity colleag, the should have sugestons for reaserch perpesas
Thats the best I can ofere.I have dyslexica also,If you want to talk more fell free to e-mail me
