testing with learning disabilities

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have my MA in Counseling and have a 3.8 GPA in my Master degree program. I am very intelligent but have trouble taking Multiple choice tests. I just took my Licensure exam and failed it. It was a 4 hour test and I thought I had passed. I am so mad at myself for failing it. This is nothing new to me however. Give me a multiple choice test and I get very confused. I have been diagnosed with Dyslexia, a math disability, ADHD, and auditory processing problems.

I am so mad at myself. It is so upsetting. it seems my brain just does not cooperate with me…..

Any suggestions as I have to take the test again in July 2003.

Hi Debbie,

First of all, stop being mad at your self. You did nothing wrong. I know it’s frustrating, but you will figure out a way to ace this exam. I know because I also have a Master’s Degree in Social Work. I have become liscenced in three states and failed my first exam in graduate school because I didn’t read the questions correctly. What has worked well for me is to contact someone and explain your situation. There are often different ways to test or they may give you more time. Just don’t give up what ever you do. You will make an excellent counselor.

Keep asking for help.

Debbie Brooks
