Kindies

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

We have had a significant number of referrals at our school for kindergarten age children. We have our guidelines regarding assessment of children ages 5-7, but I was just wondering if anyone had some good answers about testing/qualifying kindergarteners. Do you have any recommendations for avoiding testing (which is usually not valid or reliable - especially if trying to prove a learning disability) but still supporting these kiddos?

Our district uses Pathways to Reading as a K-3 preventive model. There is a website: www.pathwaystoreading.com

We have substantial numbers of free-reduced lunch and it helps to have a district-wide program in our transient times.

SOme schools have a more structured reading option for kids that are screened as higher risk for reading problems. Makes a lot of sense — probably isn’t going to hurt any of ‘em and beats running full psychs on that many kiddos.
