Adult ADHD/ADD Meet-Up

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi all. It’s been a LOOOONNNG time since I posted, but I think that this is such a cool idea that I had to share it with everyone.

An Austrailian pen-pal of mine has created a forum where adults with ADD/ADHD can go and sign up to attend social functions with other adults with ADD/ADHD, in their city. The meets take place in informal settings where people can share successes, comraderie, information, and good times. Potential attendees vote from a list of three venues in which to meet.

Go to http://adultadd.meetup.com/ and select your city. It’s always fun to expand your social circle! ;)

Peace!

oh Traci! thanx so much for your post! i have never heard of this, but i went to the website to check it out and lo and behold there was one for my city and it looks like it has some members, so i signed up and the next meeting is Apr 2.

what a great idea. i cant wait to see how it goes and if its for me.

so your pen-pal actually set this whole thing up? wow, that’s must have taken a lot of work, money, effort, and some publicity to spread the word about it.

thanx

I have been recently officially diagnosed with ADHD!

I travel to see a specialist in another town to recieve treatment.
My daughter had ADHD in the same degree that I do and it is BIG!
My son has Tourettes Syndrome also!

I am working with solutions in my every day life in regards to education and support there and timers galore, organizers etc.
I am a most creative person, expressive, funny and enjoy being around people who don’t think I am weird!
I have a special heart for the people around me and it is something I am accepting is a good thing when I show it to people who care about me!

I hope an pray I get the supports I need to go to University or college!
I have ambitions to be either a councelor for Adult ADDers or a Graphic Designer of Fine arTs.

Hi again all. Just wanted to let you know that setting up a forum on Meetup.com is actually very easy. You could do it just as well as my pen-pal, and better still, it is free! You just have to look for the links on the site if there is anything else you’d like to set up yourself.

Unfortunately, the adult ADHD meet was cancelled in my town because not nobody has signed up yet. It is hard for me to believe that there is no one else in Las Vegas who has ADHD so I’m going to try and get the word out. Just haven’t figured out how yet. If you attend one of the meet-ups in another city, please post how it goes. I’d love to hear it. Thanks!

Hey,
I signed up for the meet and I’m from NC too - I was dissapointed that the meet didn’t take place. I was looking forward to meeting and talking to someone who can relate to what I’m going through!

Hey all. I so feel the same way about meeting up with people who actually understand what I am going through. It’s one thing to have faceless names on the web (it is, however, better than nothing), but I would love to have a support system locally that I could share frustrations, successes, and laugh with.

The coolest thing that has happened to me in a long time just happened to me recently though. I met a man who is actually interested in learning more about my ADD and Fibromyalgia (which, incidently the two have been shown clinically now, to have a link….interesting), AND he doesn’t have it himself. I’ve never been with anyone who either A) isn’t annoyed with it, or B) acts like it’s not an issue in my/our life. I swear I fell in love with him almost instantly when he said he’d been “doing some research. Anyone else out there actually have a supportive mate in a relationship sense, that is patient, wants to be educated, and understanding??? Just wondering, if you’d like to share.

Take it easy, and you two from NC should hook up!!!

Sandy,

Congratulations!!! You’ve found people with nearly exactly the same traits!!! I am exactly the same way, and I also (was going to say have a problem, but it’s not really a problem) with people thinking I am “weird”. I am open minded (to a fault, some people think), I’ll try anything once, and I also have a “special heart”, creative, expressive and funny also apply. These are the gifts of ADD. I am proud to have them as hopefully we all are. I wouldn’t trade them for the world, even if it does affect me socially at times.

As far as the supports, I know that universities are required to make accomodations for people with ADD/LD by the same special education laws that protect younger students. I’ve found that most are pretty good about it. Check into lectures on tape (in the library), dirt cheap counseling (for the rough times), and free tutoring. I think your choice of intended work is fabulous for adult ADDers. Peace!!!

Hi again All Thanks to you traci ! I have looked around my area. (“meeting others with)”. also I have been talking with loads of people around this area. No luck yet but I’m not willing to give up trying. I am one of those faceless computer people, and yes this sucks but sometime some where. I will also find another to talk with. On the matter of a mate or someone special, too share all of this (me), with. I still am willing to share information about my adhd and how I see it affect me.
Although I have found very few if any, that truely have intrests. also to have no underlieing motivation, except to be with me honestly and truely.
I would fall in love in half a humming birds heart beat if I meet another with the ability to handle being with all of me, as well as be encourageing and supportive. and why I’m at it all the other things that I think make up a healthy relationship,. I think you have been giving a gift for today. Enjoy this…

Too All !! All the best

A psychotic pinnapplle (who cant spell) !! :)

Sandy, For ADD most colleges and universities offer extra time on test, a private testing room and also a note taker for those with add. Another big help is to get a tape recorder for lectures that prints out the discussion for the day…..its a great help. Ironically in my case, I am an occupational therapy major and I will eventually work with add\ld kids and others with developmental disabilities
