Early tomorrow morning I have an IEP scheduled. I’m asking the school district to pay for 1 on one remediation for my son this summer. I can’t find it now, but recently someone advised a parent to bring in sections of the National Reading Panel Report. Here’s my problem - from what I’ve read, Open Court, the system used by our school district is acknowledged as a balanced research based reading program. What I cannot find evidence for, is that it moves too rapidly for kids with ld, and therefore is not the appropriate technique to be teaching him with (he’s finishing 2nd grade, and reads so so at 1st grade level using grade 1 decodable Open Court booklets). Can anyone point me to something respectable that addresses this? Open Court describes itself as targeted toward special ed kids as well as general populations.
Thanks.
Re: Last minute help
Amy,
It’s too late to get this in time for your meeting, obviously, but I’ll give my thoughts! Open Court is a good reading program for some children. But if your son is finishing 2nd grade and is reading at a first grade level, then Open Court didn’t work for him! If he is LD, then he more than likely needs a structured multi-sensory approach to reading like one of the Orton Gillingham programs or Lindmood Bell. I happen to like Phono-Graphix a lot, also.
They may not pay for a tutor over the summer, but I’d insist on an appropriate reading program for next school year. Really, though, you may be on your own as far as remediation goes, and I’d surely try to find a trained tutor right away.

Last minute help
Hi. I posted the original message asking for help. My registration on these boards hadn’t kicked in yet. I replied yesterday to the two responses I got, by logging in (since my registration has been processed), and it hasn’t appeared. Not sure what’s going on.
I don’t know if you were looking for an alternative if you can’t find some info but have you tried to prove that your son will regress if he does NOT recieve services this summer? I was able to do that for my son and he is going to get the services based on the fact the district is concerned with regression. They said if it was for improvement that it could wait until the Fall but because there were other instances of regression when there was a break in his services that it would be in the best interest to continue services thruout the summer. Just a thought - I hope it helps - Good Luck - I know how difficult it is to “fight” the system but we will get there!!!! Fondly, KIM
