Vision Therapy test results

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Despite the fact that we are 2 months into VT, I just got the results of the initial evaluation and wanted to share with you all. Ya know, I’m always interested in your collective insights!

DS showed mild deficiencies in eye teaming (binocular instability)., difficulty with accomodative ability (shifting focus from near/far). His eye movement (pursuits) shifting (saccades) were not age appropriate. He scored in the 5th %tile on the Developmental Eye Movements Test which tests horizontal scanning.

On the Gardner Reversals Frequency test he scored in the 1st %.

In the Gardner test of visual perceptual skills he scored:
Visual discrimination raw score 14, percentile 11%
Visual spatial 15 95%
Visual Form Constancy 12 75%

He scored in the 53%ile on the Beery Developmental test of visual motor integration.

He scores poorly on the visual memory subtest of the TVPS.

They DX him with oculomotor dysfunctioin, accomodative insufficiency and binocular instability.

Thoughts?

Are they doing bilateral integration work with him. Do you think he needs that? I really think that work has been extremely beneficial to my son and our kids are very much alike.

I think vision builder is very good for visual memory but they didn’t start the visual memory/visualization work with us until he had his tracking and binocular issues under control. I think it is related to making sure that you fix the input issue first, which just makes sense. My doctor also thinks that the glasses help to promote binocularity. I am unsure why they help with this.

Do you think he has improved on the tracking exercises? This seemed to be the area that had the greatest impact on reading. Once he could follow that ball on a string he started to read for pleasure.

We haven’t had the ball on a string exercise. He did the near/far hart chart exercise, and has had a variety of exercises where he reads and flips a lens so the image is smaller and then bigger. He’s done this with his eyes patched, and now with both eyes, but with red and green stripes over the words. (this one works on the suppression issue I believe). They do additional exercises in the office. There was also one that involved moving his hands in a bilateral way, but they don’t seem to recommend as much body work as I was hoping. As it turns out we are moving in august, so he’ll need to continue with a different practice. That will be interesting.

I plan to ask them about vision builder when we go in next.

My 10 yr daughter finished vision therapy 1.5 yrs ago, and I just realized I never got a report on the tests done after V.T. We came in for follow up testing 6 months after she finished, but I did not get a report. The issue is he is now recommending PACE, but I don’t think she accomplished much in VT. She made progress in the area of convergence and strengthing her eye muscles, but her visiual processing is still an issue. I am planning to do LMB for her reading, but don’t know what to do to try to remediate the visual processing problems.
