OK, so I expect my tutoring students to be having problems — that’s why they’re here.
But why have four out of five of my exchange students had learning problems??
(And the fifth one was in a physics grad student exchange program so he was pre-selected out.)
I thought maybe there was a personality issue that brought us together — I’ve always preferred the creative original type to the cookie-cutter perfect “good” student.
But the latest just appeared off the street — or to be exact the exchange program coordinator called me after seeing the room to rent for students sign in the supermarket, so it can’t be anything I did, can it??
This one is musically talented and plays several instruments, is good at math, is an exceptionally slow reader, and can’t spell his way out of a paper bag. Barely even phonetic. This is unusual as schools in France are usually quite good at language. His speech is good and gramatical, luckily. He knows some English but can’t put it to real use. He’s left-handed but writes adequately, if you ignore the spelling. He also says he had a “difficult childhood” and managed to get expelled from elementary school. Sound like a familiar pattern?
Is everyone in the world LD, am I attracting them like flies, or has the education system worldwide gone mad and forgotten how to teach anything to anyone?
OK
So I am attracting them like flies.
Doing the best I can. He let me know this morning that I’m counselling too much, so backing off for now.
Bless You
Victoria, you are a good person. Good luck with all your “flies”

Victoriah,
There must be truth in the old addage that one catches more flies with honey than vinegar! :D (emoticons still not working at my end)

Well, Victoria, ya know doctors attract a lot of sick people, too.
They are very fortunate to have found YOU!

(Sorry…forgot the subjects aren’t very visible anymore…)
Andy! The smilies are here today! :D
yes they are!

yes they are! (just not when I type them, but they show up and I like them)
Moving smilies are a problem for those of us with visual iss
The moving smilies *literally* make me sick. Go ahead and use the others — I don’t think they will bother anyone that much, since after all you can just ignore them — but please think of the effect on someone with visual problems when you put something flashing on the screen!
Weird thing — when not logged in I got the flashing smilies making me ill; now logged in I’m not getting them (good). I have let LDOnline know that these things are distressful to me — do we actually get personal preferences here?
Victoria, maybe God in his wisdom is sending them to you because you can help them. Food for thought.
