Lexapro is a reworking of the SSRI Celexa. The reworked medication eliminates a side chain that is thought to cause side effects and does not have any therapeutic effects. Lexapro controls symptoms at a much lower dose than does Celexa, which also helps control side effects. There are no studies that I am aware of in which Lexapro was tested on children or adolescents. There are one or two studies in which Celexa was tested in adolescents and they showed it to be effective and to provoke less anxiety than other SSRIs such as Prozac.
