I know this is a medical issue but…My son is about 52 lbs now and has been on 15mg Ritilan 2x/day - this is to get him thru school - since Sept. The dr. said it is perfectly safe for him to take 10mg after school to slow down the effects of the drug leaving his body, and having more peace at home. He does not want to take it except for school. He’s checked for growth and blood pressure every 3 months by the prescribing dr., a developmental ped.
He has very little appetite - even when not on the meds for days.
When I brought him for a brief educational evaluation recently the ed therapist commented the 15 mg was a high dose. I don’t know anyone else on Ritilan, but we originally tried 5mg, then 10 last summer and didn’t see any effect. I don’t see a hugh effect now, the little bit I see him on it, but apparently they see a hugh effect at school.
What has your experience been regarding dosage?
Dosage
Dosage for meds can vary widely, as kids react differently to meds. Frankly, if everyone (you, your child, the school and the doctor) seem to think the dose is okay I think the ed therapist should keep his/her comments to him/herself.
It sounds like the doctor is carefully monitoring your child’s weight and height, and will let you know if there is a problem.
Re: Dosage
My daugher has similar problems with ADHD medication. Recently at age 13 without any change in her medication, she has grown 4 inches and 23 pounds.
For 6 years she was one ofhte smallest in her class. She is average now-maybe above.
Hang in there do what you can with shakes, etc and keep track. They do seem to grow when they need too.
Someone recently recommended adding a meal shake to the days diet. Preferably one with low carbs and high protein, from the health food store. It’s great for added nutrition, and according to the latest research protein is great for brain chemistry and very theraputic to the symptoms of ADHD. Lower carbs is also theraputic.
15 mgs isn’t a lot by any stretch, the maximum recommended dose for chidlren is 60mgs per day. If you want to lower his dose, I highly recommend diet and exercise along with meds. Cover all your basis and you can’t go wrong.
I don’t mean to dominate the board but both my boys are out, I have pile of laundry in the corner calling my name (I’m ignoring it’s pleas), but mostly I don’t want some one to scare you off with false ritalin information. If you see any posts following today that are frightening, just ignor them. The board is working out some kinks to get rid of the lies being posted.
