Has anyone used GABA to help with sleep problems?

Yes, my son used GABA for sleep problems for a couple years. He was up until 1 AM with restlessness and bad dreams until I started giving him GABA about a half hour before bed. It worked the first night!

Julie, how old was he, and how much did you give him. My son 7 plus (ADD/In) is on Concerta (was on Adderall Xr) but both have the same problems of keeping him up. Is GABA safe? I was told to use Melatonin but someone else told me that was a Hormone and it should not be used long term. What is GABA and how much should I give my son, he is only 55 lbs.

Thanks for the quick response.

Hi, Mayleng

My son was about 8, on Adderall, when I started giving him GABA Plus made by Twin Labs. I gave him one pill. It was safe. He used for about two years, every night. If we forgot, he was up! So we didn’t forget very often. I selected GABA Plus because it had niacinamide and inositol along with the GABA, both B vitamins that have a calming effect. I don’t think the extra B vitamins are required to make GABA work; it just seemed to work a little better than plain GABA. I suppose it’s like anything, you have to try it and see what works. I wish I could rememeber the dose amount of one pill, but I don’t. I used to buy them at Vitamin Shop, so I bet their on-line site would have the specifics on mg.

When he turned around 10-ish, he stopped needing it even though he was still on Adderall. I don’t know why the change.

I don’t know much about Melatonin except that my husband tried it for jet lag— he does a lot of overseas travel with signifiicant changes in time zones. He said it wasn’t much good, that he couldn’t tell the difference if he took it or not. Maybe the time change was too much for it!

Hope this helps in some way. Good luck to you— I certainly know what it is to sleepless.
