English 11 SOL (VA state tests) scores are in!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

 Well they finally are in at last! All of my inclusion 11th grade students have passed the dastardly Standard of Learning tests, not just passed but most passed with high scores. For those of you that don’t know me, I have persuaded my school to remediate students in self-contained English and reading class first and then put them in academic English inclusion class, it worked!!!!! A combination of methods with PG and Step Up to Writing next, lead the way for these scores. Who said that you couldn’t teach an older student to read and write well??? I also thank having a wonderful regular education teacher, we both taught our strengths, mine writing and reading and his literature. It can happen!!!!! :P :P :P

Shay,
Congratulations! This shows what good teaching (and a great teacher) can accomplish at any age. No telling what those kids would have been accomplishing now if they had had you teaching them in sixth grade instead of 11th.

Even more importantly — the skills you’ve taught them that enabled them to do so well are the same skills that will enable them to do all kinds of other things long after they’ve forgotten much of the SOL material. A real win-win deal.
