Do I need a doctor's diagnosis?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son was tested beginning of second grade he is now going into seventh, with a “specified learning disability”. From reading the boards and trying to understand. Do I need to have him tested by a physician to get an official diagnosis? Will this be required for SAT, ACT, etc., Who would I have test him? I know that he is dyslexic and possible CAPD.

I would appreciate any input you could give me on this.
Thanks,
Shel

If your son is currently on an IEP then you would make sure that he has a current evaluation that specifies an SLD at the time that your son would be taking the ACT or SAT. By current I mean within three years. The High School Psych. usually fills out the form. You would probably need this for the PSAT which is usually taken in Junior year in Oct. but can be taken for practice the year before. The only reason to go through all this is if you son needs an accommodation while taking the test such as extra time.

If your son does not have a current IEP then you would need additional testing to qualify him for accommodations.
