Motion Sickness and VT

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Since this topic has come up in several threads below (regarding dyslexia) I wanted to share the sudden change in my son’s motion sickness. He started getting sick in the car at 18 months, and we’ve always had to give him dramamine for car rides longer than 20 minutes since then. Shorter rides were sometimes OK, but often he’d complain. ( I should mention we live in a city, and don’t get in a car every day)

He started VT a few months ago and all of a sudden he doesn’t get car sick!. We noticed it after forgetting the dramamine, and decided to stop giving it to him and VOILA! no problems. We took a 3 hour trip yesterday - still no problem. He was even able to read and do a game boy in the car.

Karen,

I think motion sickness is related to the vestibular system. And most likely, the therapy you are doing has impacted his vestibular system. I think that is wonderful–a really life changing result, especially since you are moving to the suburbs where cars are a more daily experience.

We did the VT with a SI OT. Things improved greatly

She still gets car sick.

Mostly in bumper to bumper traffic (when you CAN”T get to the side of the road and get the door open fast enough!)

My son never had motion sickness but he also never read in the car. Now, he won’t go anywhere in the car without a book.

My husband can’t understand how anyone could read in a car.
