Is there any help for me?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I was diagnosed with learning disabilities when I was in my mid 40’s. I was started on Ritilin, but my new psychiatrist doesn’t think adults should take Ritilin and discontinued it. What is available to help adults with attention dificit disorder?
Confused!! :?

I had to laugh at your post! The smiley was a perfect addition!

It does sound confusing. So you have LD and ADD? It’s not unusal to have both.

How do you feel about your new psychiatrist? The reason I ask is that I know, for a fact, that there are many adults on Ritilin and other meds for ADD. My children’s father is one of them. He was diagnoised at age 41 and swears the meds are very, very right for him. I beleive the old school of thought was that kids outgrow ADD therefore meds would never be appropriate for adults but I’m surprised a profession would still feel this way. Perhaps he/she has a different reason for taking you off meds? You should ask. Meds are contraversial but, as an adult, your doctor should give you all the info and let you decide.
