New - have a interesting topic

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

:D I have an interesting topic for feedback. I have two boys, both have been diagnosed as having a “learning disability”

I personally do not like this term, they both are dyslexic and are having extreme trouble in school with reading.

Our sd - has ignored my older son, now 11 for the past 4 years of his schooling - and he has fallen behind in school, he is now tested at 2 years behind grade level. I have tried everything - reading to him, with him - working with phonics, etc etc etc he was just having trouble.

anyway to my question…..my husband and I pulled both boys out of public school last march because my older son had been harrassed throughout the school year by peers and was physically attacked on 4 occassions. The school was well aware of the problem, the principal and teachers just chose to ignore the problem until the day that my son was bodyslammed on his head and suffered from a concussion.

My dilemma is that we do not want them to get back into public schools because the educators and administrators just do not seem to care. My son was harrassed for months about being “stupid” “retard” and “dummy” because he had trouble reading…..

what would you do this year? continue to keep him out of public school, continue to homeschool?

thanks from Alaska

I certainly understand why you pulled your son from public school but I don’t understand what would be different if they went back?

And what do your sons say about going back? Have these months away from school made either of them miss it? Do either of them say they’d like to go back?

If they wanted to go back, I’d send them back. If your sons seem happy and content to homeschool, I’d continue to homeschool. Your public school isn’t likely to change for the better anytime soon.

kds,

I don’t see the dilemma here. How could anyone send a child back to a school where they were physically endangered?

But I would suggest that if you continue to homeschool that you learn the methods to remediate the reading disorders. This site is an excellent place to learn how. Read the articles under reading under the link “LD In Depth”. Good luck!
