Hi all I need some advise. My 9 year old son was diagnosed with adhd at age 7 and is currently medicated. He does well accademically — reads at a 7th grade level, spells well and is above average in math. His issues have always been impulsivity, lack of organization, difficulty staying on task, and immaturity. Last spring, he was tested for the gate program the results were surprising to say the least. I don’t have the scores in front of me, but he scored 90th percentile or better accross the board with the exception of non-verbal where he scored at the 35th percentile. At the time he took the tests he was on a high dose of hydracodeine due to a nerve injury and chronic pain condition. I don’t know whether to assume this was the cause of this discrepancy or not. The school won’t retest him for the GT program again until next spring. If he does indeed have undiagnosed difficulties in this area I would like to know it now so intervention can begin. Should I request evaluation by the diagnostician now? Is the school required to provide testing for a child who is not behind accademically? Thanks for any advise.
This is interesting to me because my son has nonverbal issues and he did look very adhd.
After interactive metronome and vision therapy he doesn’t look adhd at all. He isn’t impulsive, has stopped fidgeting in class and is much more focused in general.
I can honestly tell you that the school is pretty useless with such issues. You may want to see a developmental optometrist and have him evaluated.
