My 10 year old severely dysgraphic child has a new spec-ed teacher this year. We just found out at the school’s open house last night. As we chatted, the teacher mentioned she had not read son’s IEP, test results, or file yet but had scheduled him with other students and would be using the Kansa Learning Strategies System this year. I have never heard of this system, couldn’t find anything on it on the web, and am concerned about scheduling and determining a system without the benefit of knowing the specifics on a child. BUT, I am trying to keep an open mind. She agreed to call me after she reviews his file next week and we could discuss this further.
In the interim, has anyone had experience with this system or know how I could learn more about it?
Thanks for you help!

Barb,
The Learning Strategies Curriculum and the Strategies Intervention Model are the result of years of work by researchers and educators from the the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. You can find an overview of the curriculum and model at http://www.ku-crl.org/htmlfiles/about_the_center.html. The strategies are only to be taught by people trained to teach them. I have had amazing results with many students especially using the strategies designed for reading and written expression. Of course, I have also had success with Wilson, Lindamood, etc. I think that a program needs to be tailored to the individual needs of the student — isn’t that what IEP means? Ask the teacher to keep you posted with work samples and the progress chart that is a part of the strategies for written expression.
