New LD online BB Format confusing

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have not looked at this site for several months. The format has changed…for the worse.

Before, people could reply directly to an individual thread, and also renam the subject of the thread within an original topic.

Am I doing something wrong here? I wanted to reply to someone and it just goes to the bottom.

Hi.

I agree that the old format was much better. One person could start a subject, and then others could reply and spin off on other subjects. You could see all the threads, and also you could reply to a specific person, who might be one of the first threads. I tried to reply to another person, who was thread number 14, but she will have no idea that I replied to her post unless she happens to go through the whole post. (Just as I’m replying to your post here, but here there are only 2 threads.)

Can they possibly go back to the former one?

I disagree. This is more like other forums I have been on, so I like it better. Besides the tree type organization reminded me of the hd on Windows 3.1..

Oh yeah, the one thing I would prefer is to have the newest post first. If I want to go thru to the first post it is easier to go backwards like that than to have to go down to the last post thru other stuff. If you get my drift.

I’ve never seen one that goes first to last before.

Sara,
What you may not have heard is that the boards had a lot of trouble with ill-mannered posters who prevented those who sought accurate information and support from getting it. I think the new format was in part a response to prevent such abuse.

I don’t like this new format at all I miss the people I counted on so much to get a fast response.

There were people I alway look for on the board and if I wasn’t interested in reading certain people’s post I just didn’t. I don’t understand the big deal.

I don’t come here much anymore either. I am sure that is no big loss since I’m a parent and my expertise lies only in my experiences.

I honestly don’t understand what is so unclear about the board. I don’t like the emoticons so I have shut them off. But you just type in the space and send it. You can follow threads pretty easy as they are all listed from first to last (though I don’t like that order, it is still a logical one).
I don’t know really how this keeps others away. It is similar to just about every other forum I have been on and seen except for the yahoo ones (I hate yahoo, but don’t find that at all hard, just hate it).

I also really really really don’t get how this one has less problem with spammers etc. Unless people don’t know so much about it and there is just not a problem yet, or if the firewalls are better on this. This seems to be a bit more modern a set up.

Note: For all confused. Just ignore all the emoticons, the little boxes (B, I, quote, url, etc. etc.), the only box you need to think about is: preview and submit.

The earlier versions were *very* hard to manage, used a lot of computer stuff… when I worked at LD OnLine the tech folks spent an awful lot of time keeping them from clogging up the whole system. And… moderating them was a *bear.*

This system is a whole lot more computer-efficient — and yes, it’s also a common format (cause-effect :)). So while it’s not familiar to folks who’ve been using this one, it’s going to be familiar to new people who’ve been at, say, the cycling forums (http://www.cyclingforums.com/).

Another advantage of this way of doing it is that it’s easier to moderate. The old way had no registration — so it was open season. That worked for years (but partly b/c nobody saw some of the minor flame wars :)) — but it always made me nervous.

I think anything new just takes some getting used to. I really love the feature where it tells you the threads that have new posts! And if there are several pages of posts, I just click on the last page to read the newest posts. So really, this forum is pretty good once you get used to it!

Hi des -

When I am LOGGED IN I can change the order of posts from oldest first to newest first, and I can limit the number of posts I want to view - that is I can look at 1 day’s worth, 1 week’s worth, etc.

Scroll down to the bottom of the messages (still in the gray box area) and you will see buttons to select the options you are looking for.

what I find most disavantageous is the loss of the “tree”. Before, if there were several posts, you could spin off in different mini-posts. Now, you can not reply to anyone in particular, as each post follows chronologically.
