help on score discrepancy

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

A lady on an other board posted her child’s IQ scores there and I was wondering if I was correct in thinking there were some serious things that needed to be looked at.

Apparently this child had been in speech services at age 4 and taken out in 1st grade. School testing showed IQ score in 90’s range (V,P and FS), however private testing showed a verbal score of 80 and a performance score of 117. The mom mentioned that the private tester made mention of the score discrepancy but no specific recommendations. I told her I thought it indicated a problem in the speech/language area that needed further investigation. The child is a 3rd grader failing all subjects.

Was I correct in thinking this (without knowing subtest scores) and what should I advise her to do? The school didn’t find him eligible for any services based on their testing. (She didn’t mention specific tests given or their scores).

Thanks for your help.

It would be interesting to compare the reports and scores on the school’s & private testing. A thirty point discrepancy is definitely worth looking at more closely.
There’s also a rather ridiculously high incidence of kids getting speech services in early intervention, being “cured” of their problems and falling off the lists, and then in third or fourth grade hoisting up big fat flags for LD issues. (I b’lieve there’s an article with stats on it in the early intervention section in LD InDepth)

A factor that needs to be considered for placement in LD is the achievement scores. You have not mentioned them, if you are considering some LD issues. The other issue to look at is what assessment tool was used in each setting and yes they should have comparable data but with this discrepancy (between the two different IQ tools)- I wonder.

samantha,
The other mom didn’t post those yet, I have asked about them. If she posts them I will get a better idea of what all is going on. What I wrote above is the basics of what I have understood to be going on. I have a 41 pt spread between verbal and performance myself and now understand why some things are hard for me (verbal is 121, performance is 80) so seeing that big point spread for this kid kind of stood out to me. Thanks for your reply.

Sue,
I mentioned your observation to the other mom. Basically I just want to encourage her to not sit on it but to investigate further. Thanks for your reply also.

I always know I can count on this site to help. Thanks!

Wow amyf I have never seen that type of spread before.(we are talking 20+ years of reading psy reports!) That is very interesting and I bet you become quite frustrated at times with that. Good for you to understand your strengths and non-strengths and can capitalize.
