Test of Writing and Reading Efficiency (TOWRE) results?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

The TOWRE has three areas that are scored. Below is what my son
scored (Percentile ranking compared to students his age) and the names of the areas tested
>
> Sight Word Efficiency 16%
> Phonemic Decoding Efficiency 1%
> Total Word Reading Efficiency 3%

He is 12 and reads at the 3rd grade level as found along with this test. His IQ is 124.

What other testing do I need for him to determine what type of Reading help he needs? Thanks

Your son does not need any more testing. He needs a good tutor trained in PhonoGraphix or a similar program. If your son will work with you, you might want to read Reading Reflex (which will teach you how to teach the PhonoGraphix method) and teach him yourself. You can go to ReadAmerica.net for tutor referrals if you can’t find one easily in your area.

TOWRE is Test of Word Reading Efficiency. You child probably fits the dyslexic profile very well. The school certainly did fail him as they should have identified this years ago. I personally use Phono-Graphix but I suggest getting an experienced tutor on Phono-Graphix or Lindamood Bell. He has a lot of work to do, but he is bright so he should do well with the right help.

I did have my child tested at a Lindamood Bell clinic, but you may want to use that money towards the tutoring. It should be fairly intensive, if possible.
