this format stinks

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

The flow of this new formal stinks. I read a post called “need input for teacher” submitted by “Michele”, then I read a response by another member (Janis). I wanted to ask Janis a question about what she had written, even used her name in the “subject” area to get her attention. But, when I clicked back to the forum here, while my post is on the top and my name is written in small letters under “last post”, there is no way for “Janis” to see my post unless she reads through the subject again, nor is there any way to see that the subject title has changed to spin off onto a sub-topic.

Before, an original post could initiate several sub-topics, conversations, and people could directly address different members, much the way a real group discussion might happen. This format is too unyielding and stops the flow.

Anne-Marie,

Here are some tips that might help. First, if Janis is a registered member (I think she is) and if she has logged in, a yellow flag will appear on any threads that have new responses since she last visited the board. So, she will be able to see that there is a new post on a thread in which she has participated. If you use the quote feature, this will tip her off that you are responding to her post, rather than to the original post. A bit more clunky than the old format to be sure, but still workable. I hope this helps.

Anne-Marie,

Hi! This is the first post I have read today! I’ll go look for the one you’re talking about. If I can’t find it, I’ll come back here and ask. Or send me one of those private messages.

Personally I think the Schwab board stinks. It is slow slow slow. The bright orange is difficult if you have visual issues. And last time I looked it was full of people chewing over and over the same complaints. I don’t go there any more.

I actually much prefer this board. I limit my reading of posts to about four categories here. It is much easier when posts are divided into separate categories, I think. The Schwab board has no organization and it is very hard to find previous posts. There ae some neat people over there, but I need the organization that this board provides.

LOL —  looks like you just can’t please everybody!
I, too, find the Schwab board has some advantages — hey, I can mark a discussion to be put on “my page” so I don’t forget who I replied to — but no, the threads aren’t any easier to follow and because there are no categories it’s easy to get lost.
I reckon I like the cycling forum best  http://www.cyclingforums.org
tho’ it is a little on the geeky side.

Well, Sue, I’m sorry to say it would be a bit of a stretch for me to join the cycling forum just to get to a great format! I guess I’ll just have to stick to this one!
