Question/comments for Tammy with the 3rd grader

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi!

I didn’t want to hi-jack Chelsea’s thread on third grade so I thought I’d start another on your son. Hope you don’t mind.

It’s good that the teacher is giving you your son’s writing work early in the week so that you have time to complete it but I have other concerns. I may be way off base. Please forgive me.

When your son was privately evaluated, did the evaluator make any suggestions on useful therapy and/or learning programs? Just because he didn’t qualify for an IEP through the school doesn’t mean he couldn’t use a little extra help. My son did not qualify the first time he was tested. What they didn’t tell me was that he was one point over help and they only help the bottom 2.5% So he was at the bottom 3%. Had I realized that, I would have gotten him help earlier when it is easier on everyone concerned. At my request, the school retested him two years later because he was doing soooooo poorly. He qualified but now we have to deal with the self esteem issues that failed two years cost. And then for the first six months he was tutored not remediated. If your child is spending two hours/day being tutored he will never catch up. Please ask what program is being used. The teachers here can help you evaluate it.

It sounds like you are getting no accommodations other then the homework early enough to get it done by Friday? Homework increases each grade. Maybe you can get it all done now but what about next year? There are only so many hours in the day. And sometimes there are more important things than homework to do…

Our school has 24 children in each 5th grade class and yours has 29 in 3rd. I’ll bet your school is even more likely to help fewer children and skimp on the help. You’ll need to keep an eye on it.

Hi-
I had my son tested early………..summer of kindergarden. It was said at that time that my son had a emerging learning disability, probable CAPD, and receptive/expressive language delay. The reccommendations at that time was to have a learning specialist work with him at school(which I have never heard of so that means there is no such thing in our district!!)also to continue with tutoring, have room accomadations, continue with speech, possible OT for pencil weakness??. I actually was fortunate enough to get him into the resource room…….and I guess I didn’t explain that very well………..he has modified class assignments and resource room hasn’t started yet and I think there was a little bit of confusion because new teacher didn’t know my son and his capabilities.

In December of 2001 I also had him tested at a speech/Language clinic and basically came up with same thing. The recommendations there were about the same also stated we may try some meds to help his inattenativeness.

Then in January of 2002 the school asked if they could test my son and I agreed. The outcome of that testing showed a rather severe deficit in processing oral information and pschyco-motor speed. I t was then recommended for extra help and that’s when we got him placed in resource room.

The homework issue has only been since school started………..because there was some mix up with the teacher understanding our situation. I typically do not do homework for more than an hour. Preferable1/2 hour!!

As far as the class sizes, I have wrote a letter to our superintendant and who knows if that will make a difference!!

I do plan on seeing a Audiologist soon to have my son tested for CAPD…..and I hope to get some good recommendations there!!!!!

Thanks so much………..I can use some direction here!!
