Graphomotor & drawing

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi
I have a child with graphomotor difficulties. He has an extremely difficult time with drawing. Recently, on his book report he was asked to illustrate some vocabulary words (not sure of the point) so he used clip art. He was also required to make a poster depicting the likeness of one of the characters so he scans a picture from the book. When he got his book report back, he got the highest scores in all areas except the illustrations. It appeared that he got marked down because he did not “hand draw” the pictures. How do you handle graphomotor difficulities? Everything that I have read focuses on the writing aspect but what about the drawing?
Thank you.
Susan

Hi susan,

We have two kids with fine motor issues, one is on an IEP, one is not, although he is ADHD/LD as well. We have made it clear to teacher at each grade level that the focus of our “school work” time at home has to be academics, and we are not going to torture our kids with hours of craft projects. Both of my kids use clip art (Google Images is great!) extensively, and as they’ve gotten older have become more adept at using computer software to produce attractive graphics for their projects that they can actually take pride in.

I’d have a talk with the teacher. If your son is on an IEP, if necessary you can have it written into the IEP that he won’t be penalized for not producing hand-done artwork in academic subjects.
