Hello all,
I am a 1st year special educating teacher. I teach in the Chicago Public Schools. I have a 9 year old student who is in the 4th grade and can not recognize his alphabets. He can not write his ABC’s without looking up at the board and compying them down. I tried flash cards with this child. I have tried using different types of letter identifiers but nothing seems to work. If any of you have any ideas of how I can help this student PLEASE send me any ideas. I am open to all sorts of new approaches.
Thank you

This might do the trick for you. I think this program is free. I have not used it personally but heard the lady who wrote about it, Mona, at the readbygrade3 yahoo group talk about her program. You might want to look at this to see if it will help you. You could always join that group and ask her questions.

Re: LD child
I’m wondering what you thought about the flashcards approach. It’s a very visual approach and it does sound as if this child has some visual imaging issues if he must look up repeatedly to copy the alphabet.
What about a kinesthetic approach? Get a wooden or plastic puzzle of the alphabet and have him work the letters by touch.
Try teaching him his alphabet while teaching him simple words that are significant to him that “sound out” each letter, for example bat, cat, dog, etc. Help him “do” the words using a multi-sensory method. He will learn the letters as he learns “to do” the words. Check out THE SOUNDS OF WORDS, at http://www.1stbooks.com/. It teaches the student how to use the multi-sensory process to “do” any word.
