Ron Davis - methods

I don’t have firsthand knowledge, so please take this as personal opinion. I have seen a lot of people selling Davis stuff on other sites, and I have seen a lot of Davis program students on the internet. Personally, I am not impressed, for a variety of reasons. I would suggest you appriach the book and the sales pitches with a healthy degree of skepticism.

I would have to agree with Victoria. I have read the book but can find no research to support any of his methods. The problem I have is a parent who is just convinced that his methods are the only way her son can learn to read and does not want him taught any decoding skills.

I am curently reading The Gift of Dyslexia and I just don’t see how any child can go from a 3rd grade reading level to a 8th grade reading level in one week. I am reading this with a lot of skepticism. I would appreciate hearing from a dyslexic who has seen improvement with this method.

I mentioned this before: go to the IDA (International Dyslexia Association) bulletin board. Until I gave up reading it several months ago, they had a lot of Davis people there. I suggest that you look at their organization, spelling, and attitude and decide if you think any of this is positive.

Tell the parent that you are *not* Davis certified and that if she wants his trained people she will have to pay the money and go to one of his programs. This is only responsible and professional, to not get involved in something you aren’t trained for, right?
As far as decoding, well, you can teach what you are trained to do and what you have materials for, and if she wants something else she can provide it. Hey, so many people have had to fight this from the opposite side when the school refused to do phonics and only taught memorization, it’s only fair to do the same.
