Could anyone tell me what a Atypical Specific Developmental Disorder is. Is it some type of LD?
Re: Quick Question for all you experts
I answered this in another forum and I think it is a logical misreading (or mishearing) of Atypical Pervasive Developmental Disorder— a high functioning form of autism. The “Atypical” and “Developmental disorder” trigger the thought that this is a medical dx, not an educational one.
I don’t think there is such a thing as a Atypical *Specific* DD.

Is this a little one-under three??
I work in Early Intervention and we use that terminology but honestly its more about classifying and coding to keep the government happy than it is to give useful information to a parent
Typical delay(I think) is what you would see in a child with Downs. There will be delayed motor and speech skills but that is as expected and will follow a certain pattern typical for kids with Downs
Atypical means it is out of whack with what else we are seeing in the child. Motor skills are within normal range, cognitive appears a-okay but child isnt speaking so shows atypical language development.
Does that help???
I often wonder how many of the language delays we see at 0-3 go into a LD later on. WE dont have the ability to follow the kids.
With my own child it definitely did turn into reading and language problems in school but Im only one statistic.
