Recommendations for 8th grade testing

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

What do you recommend as the essential tests used for a three year reevaluation for my 8th grade son with a language based learning disability? It seems to me he will test well on most of the tests that are used by the school that include decoding single words, reading single sentences, etc because of the remediation that he has undergone. The difficulties are most apparent with reading lengthier passages so sustaining rate and accuracy is a problem as well as his written work.

(As an aside, I tried colored overlays with him with his reading last night, and he found one (a darker green color) that was he felt was effective. I have to explore this further and find out what he liked about this particular one)

Just a comment on the overlays, I think some people find them helpful, but they aren’t in any sense a cure. (Not to say that you were implying this or not.) Anyway if the kid does like one over another there may be a good reason for this, and it may help. I know of a few adults that seem to find them beneficient.

for an 8th grader(looking ahead to high school and accomodations on the PSAT and SAT) you might want WISCIII, Woodcock Johnson III, Gray Oral Reading 4-this looks at accuracy, comprehension and rate on passages, not just sentences.

The school reading specialist has offered to do the Burns and Roe Informal
Reading Inventory and feels that she can get relevant information from that tool. How does it compare to the GORT-4?
Thank you for any help you can give because I don’t know the difference.

A reading inventory is an informal assessment that can give good information. But I would prefer the GORT-4 for a third year re-eval due to the fact that it is standardized.

And yes, definitely use the TOWL-3. It is a good test.
