Problems with Math and Money

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

:? I need some help. I have a ld that has my math comp at 5th grade, english and spelling at 7th grade. I have trouble with money, I can and try to spend a amount over and over again(ex 20.00 I will end up spending it 3 different times or not remember that I need to add up all the monthly payments). I also have the problem believing that most people are good. I went to a school that offered medical sign language as a career. They knew I had a ld it was asked as part of the admissions paperwork. I was told that this was the only school that offered this program. I beleived them. I was working full time during the day and going to night school. I took out loans to help me get through school, are financil officers not suppose to help you? I was told that if I kept taking out the max each time I would have some money left over to help with bill’s, books etc.. I could not pass the licence board test because of the sentence context and grammer. I felt like a failure.

I then found Medical Assisting, again the school told me they were the only accredidate program and when I graduated that I could take my test and be certified right away. I beleived them. I passed the certification test after a lot of work. I am currently working as a CMA.

Anyway both schools have now cost me 90,000. My folks are upset that they (both schools) let me take out that much knowing that I would never make enough a month to make the loan payments. Both loans have been consolidated and they have lowered the payments to 60 a month but I am not even paying the intrest on it then. I will still be paying after I am in the ground.

I am horrible about money I get us into trouble with our finances all the time. I am lucky that I have a supportive husband and folks who will take the time to help me. But math concepts are the hardest for me.
I know I should of be responsiable for myself and not get into things like this, but there is no way I will ever be able to pay this off.

Has anyone else had this problem? Have you found help?
Please Help!![

My LD is Other Health Impaired (low birth weight because of prematurity) that has my math comp at barly 5th grade, english/spelling at between 7th & 8th grade, almost the same as you.

I am going to start college soon, I have low vision & dispite my LD I have taught myself to read and write braille (tactile system used by the blind). Sorry I don’t know how to help because I need help myself (I am still living at home at the age of 21 so my parents help me with money but I do understand how you feel). :(

Shannonloucma I have a mathematics learning disability quite badly, you know? To be honest with you, I have about a grade level over you with regards to mathematics. And that means that I can do a little bit of pre algebra like a seventh grader or so! Does not stop me, though :D

To me, online banking is a godsend because the computer keeps track of your money for you and you just have to keep that budget. You could go to a bank and have them help you out with a budget, look them in the eye and explain your situation, and those folks at the bank will help you out. Remember, they make money with each new account they open. You should never define yourself as learning disabled, you know? We are all more than just that, especially thsoe of us with mathematics learning disabilites. But, if you decide to have the bank help you out, you tell them you have a disability that makes math a bit hard for you, and as we say in the south, you tell them to hook you up! There are good computer programs to help you with your real world bill paying math too, like that Quicken and whatnot.

You are in a good trade, I assume you have tried the Direct Loans Program to help with your loans? The Direct Loans Program is run by the department of Education in the U.S. It is called the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program and they are trustworthy. I do not work for them or anything, dear, but they are like run by the governement, you know?
They can help you because you can have an income contigent payment plan. That means that you can pay enough for your loans and still have money for your bills and food and bus fare. You should look them up.

I would speak with an advocacy agency for learning disabled adults if you are fortunate enough to actually have one in your city, because the schools you went to to learn your nice trade, could have helped you get a grant, they might have mislead you! Nothing hurts in finding these things out.

peace to you :D

Hello, Shannon, Merlin, Everyone –

I make a habit to keep my receipts from stores, until I reconcile/balance
my checkbook. I make sure I write down the check-number, date, and amount of the payment of the check, and to whom I wrote the check.
I make sure at the beggining and end of the month I know what my checking account balance is. My bank does have online banking, and also,
they have an audio-computer system which I can hear spoken my account balance, after I key in my account number and code on the phone. I use notebooks or letter-sized notepads as workspace to
balance my checkbook; make a “worksheet” with a ruler.
I draw 2 narrow columns on the right side of paper (1 inch wide) and
caluculate the adjusted bank balance from my reciepts, and check-register record of my checkbook.

By The Way (BTW) : I just paid my monthly SLMA (Student Loan) installment, $51.00 ) by internet — bank.

Best regards; /signed/ Joe Tag,Jr. << [email protected] >>

Life sucks then you die so party hardy and get high.

It is obvious, from the quote below, that “PitBull” was “posting under the <br> influence. The comments should be disregarded.

My advice – review some books on Personal Finance, at the local
public library. There is a good television show on PBS, called
“Right On The Money” check www.pbs.org and tv.yahoo.com for
listings/schedule.

I only have one credit/debit/ATM card; linked to my checking account.
I don’t want or need a second one. I do have a savings account too.

Good luck.
