Spec. Ed. and College loans?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I ‘hear’ that the President has approved more money to continue the program to pay off college loans for spec. ed. teachers working in poor schools. I never heard of this as an undergraduate, and paid all of the bills. :(
I am presently earning my masters degree. The bills are piling up- and
I am still teaching in a poor school as a full-time spec. ed. teacher. Does anyone know…….is this offer good for people earning a masters degree? :?

Check with your university where they have scholarship applications. That is where I read all about the progam you are talking about.

I, too, am in a similar situation. I didn’t have the right kind of loan for forgiveness for a poor school. Then I began a graduate program, partly because I believed I would receive up to $5,000 forgiveness for pursuing an advanced degree while serving in an impoverished district. Shortly thereafter, however, I learned that I did not qualify for the forgiveness because there was a stipulation that a person could not have any outstanding student loans that were in repayment. I don’t mean in default, either. You couldn’t be paying on a loan for your undergraduate degree (even if it was on schedule) and still qualify.

Try the official federal government’s web site or call them to find out for sure. I wouldn’t be so quick to believe what the college may tell you, though.

Hope this works out better for you than it has for me. I’m finishing my masters with approximately $20,000 of accumulated debt for both degrees only to find myself with a pay schedule freeze for the indeterminant future and to realize that I am not considered a highly qualified teacher for the work I’m doing. I know I’m supposed to be a hot commodity but so far none of the recruitment/retention efforts have affected me. Sorry to whine but sometimes I just can’t stop myself.

Thanks for the info. I didn’t hear any whining- My administrator asked me how I intended to get an IEP done by Thursday when we have an early release on Wednesday. I said, “simple, I will be doing it at home like I do all of them!” Thats not whining, it is a fact.
