HELP TEACHING APD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I fairly certain that my 4th grade daughter has an apd…. we are on the waiting list with our school district to be tested. Does anyone have any suggestions as to helping Sarah with her learning skill during the interum. I have no idea what to do at this point and am looking for a little direction.

and looking for a qualified audiologist in your area that can perform the full APD evaluation.

Lena,

I would agree with Moms that you’d be much better off having the APD testing done privately. You can also go to www.ncapd.org and find an audiologist specializing in APD under professional listings. There is no one-size-fits-all therapy for APD. It totally depends on where it effects your child. If she has langauge delays, you need a speech/lanaguage evaluation. If she has educational delays, you need an educational evaluation. The school can do these evaluations. In the case of a reading disorder, many schools do not offer effective remediation, so sometimes it is best to get help outside the school. But anyone would have to have more information in order to recommend anything for your child.

When you talk to her, slow down between phrases. Make sure she makes eye contact with you, and provide plenty of visual cues.
