i have known there is a problem for years. i told the school last year that i think he is dyslexic (pardon the spelling im new) but they said they dont even begin to test for those “things” (and she said it smugly as if i dont have a clue about my own son) until 3rd grade…… then after 6 months in school with little to no work being done by him, they “got around” to testing him, to find out that his IQ is 138 but his performance is low…… thats all i know. now we are in florida and the “testing wait” has begun again. he can do all the work they give him on the computer with ease but when it comes to having to write anything he wont, or does very little, so he is failing the 3rd grade. he says to me lately that he hates school because it is boring………..how can i help him and how can i get a real diagnoses. i know somehting is wrong and his teacher does, i want to pull out my hair. i want him to enjoy school not hate it.
thanks for reading this post
Re: how do you get a diagnoses?
Do they have opportunities for gifted students where you are?
Do you have the test results — such as the subtest scores (or at least verbal vs. performance)? Did they test reading separately (one would hope…)?
Hi Skoobi,
I also live in Florida - Satellite Beach!
I’m in about the same position you are in - trying to get a diagnosis.
I have learned from this board that the best evaluation is done by a neuropsychologist or a developmental pediatrician.
Where are you located? I am looking for names of the above two specialties - if you are close to me, I’ll tell you what I find out as soon as I get some names - finding them has not been easy for me so far as I have been looking for a week now with no results yet.
Best of luck to you! Our kids are worth the effort!
