I am a College Advisor at a community college. I am researching the efficacy of the open-door policy for the learning disabled student.
I feel this institution needs more supportive programs for the learning disabled student to be successful. If you know of any articles or materials that support my thesis, please let me know. I am looking to find more constructive ways to help the learning disabled student and maybe I can make a difference at my employer.
Thanks,
Veeta
Re: I need help finding research information!
We have such a program here (I’m the full time tutor) though the program is for “high risk” students — those who have to take pre-101 level classes in Math or Reading/English —not specifically LD. I don’t need to tell you that an awful lot of LD students qualify.
Look in the research about “developmental education.” We just got a major grant (5 years, 1.5 million dollars) because we designed a program with “intrusive assistance” — because that is what the research indicates these students benefit from. It’s not enough to Have Services Available.
I would do a search for “developmental education” and “intrusive” and see what came up at the ol’ college library.
We have a full time social worker who literally runs down students to let them know somebody cares whether or not they go to class. She’ll walk them over to my office which has a 16-computer lab, so they know we don’t bite. It makes a difference.
Re: I need help finding research information!
(Oh, and the lab has assistive technology — screen and text readers, even instructional software though we haven’t worked that into the curric. yet — and it’s especially appealing because you don’t have to put an “I’m Disabled” tag on your back to use it.)
Thanks to Helen and Sue
Your information for LD college students was very helpful.
Thanks again,
Veeta
proof that it's not working
Common sense strongly suggests you’re right but the best proof might come from your own school’s data.
What pencentage of your school’s identified LD students successfully graduate? What’s your drop out rate among your identified LD students?
The answer to both or either of those questions could be all the proof you need.
