I am a former teacher and an author of materials for special educators. I am currently researching what kinds of IEP objectives and goals are being written for students grades 6-12.
What areas do you typically cover when you write your IEP objectives? What areas would you like to see a book with suggested IEP goals and objectives cover?
How are content standards and NCLB influencing what you include?
Thank you very much for your help!

Re: IEP Objectives
I usually try to include reading comprehension goals…..finding main idea, prediction, iden. plot, using context clues. For math again, more generalized identify key words in word problems, using correct operation, using calculator, specific skills only if there is a true deficit that the calculator can’t modify for them. For writing I try to include technology and wordprocessor when possible and use of organizers.
I keep things less specific when possible as the students will be making progress in the regular classroom and I’ll be evaluating them on what other teachers are instructing on.
Hope that helps some!
Re: IEP Objectives
I’m am a new student in the master’s program for special ed. I have been given an assignment to find students goals, and my goals for the student. I find the whole “goal” topic so vague and confusing. How do you know the correct language to use in writing IEP’s, is there a list to look at to help write goals??? HELP!! Please!:)
Thanks
Sally
My district acutally has a “bank” of goals that we must choose from. These are all aligned with our state standards. I pick 2 goals per subject area. Of course I teach tons more, but I only want to document 2, and record keep 2 and test 2 to stay sane.
NCLB has influenced our teaching but not IEP goals because last year we were forced to already choose from goals that exactly are from the state standards. Before, we didn’t have to.
Honestly, I chose goals that are easy to test like computation in math. I don’t do the story problem ones. I teach them but don’t test them for the IEP. I do test them in class though.
We just had a big meeting yesterday and were told that our teaching and our IEP goals need to refect the State standards. I asked them when we would get remedial materials that would reflect them. It was funny, I got a “look” but its true, we need materials that match. FOr example, one of our state standard is how to read things like a how to manual ….reading directions…I don’t have materials for that. Now, the rest I do have grom my regular ed days, but our remedial stuff does not reflect many of the standards in reading.
