Concerta and OCD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My ADHD son has been on Concerta for 3 months now and it doesn’t seem to be helping. He was previously on Ritalin which worked well for almost a year. Last spring he start to show signs of OCD. Since that time his OCD symptoms have been getting worse and since using the Concerta he seems to be going down hill fast with respect to his OCD symptoms. My question is, are his OCD symptom brought on by the Ritalin and Concerta or is this just something else we have to deal with besides his ADHD. What are your experiences?

My son did the exact same thing on Ritalin and Concerta! It took months to get him over the OCD thoughts he was having. We ended up going on imipramne for several mos. and then were able to add Straterra. He is doing much better now but Straterra doesn’t help with ADHD nearly as well as stimulants. We just didn’t have a choice. The dr. said she doesn’t ever want him to be on stimulants again! Hope this helps. Jan

If you are entering the teenage years, that can be part of it. We have had that with our son, with out meds. He will be trying Lexapro, with concerta.
I’ll let you know how it works.
He had been on lexapro, and doing good, except for attention. A Doctor change, caused a medicine change to wellbutrin. He could not take it, it dried him up. I have seen much better attitude, with a anti-depressant. It could be possible, the child needs both.
